July 23 is the Cleveland triathlon and it is a popular newbies first-time event. I was thinking of hosting a one-time newbies bike ride/transitions practice on Thursday, July 20 at 6:30 PM. Meeting location is to be determined. Possible choices are in no particular order: Rocky River reservation Sweetwater Landing picnic area, Huntington Beach south parking lot, Marginal road downtown (meet on the road by the Rock Hall - street parking is available) and N. Chagrin Strawberry picnic area.
The plan is to do a 1-hour easy pace bike ride (we'll do out and back, so you can go shorter if you'd like) and then practice T2 (bike to run) transitions. I will also answer any questions you have. If you are interested, please post here and tell me your location preference. [Note that Rocky River is fairly flat, but traffic can get congested; Lake Road is pancake flat, but is bumpy and full of traffic until reaching Avon Lake; Marginal Road is mostly flat and the traffic isn't too bad, but we'd have to traverse a bike path with pedestrians; and N. Chagrin is hilly, but less traffic troubles.]
Just let me know.
Thanks,
Jen

Hi Jen, I think that sounds great. I am doing the CLE triathlon as my first and I would love to come out on Thurs, July 20th. Marginal road by the Rock Hall is best for me.
Thanks, Cortney

Cortney and others,
I had a large group show up last night for the Newbies ride and they voted for having the session at Rocky River Reservation. Hope that is okay.
We'll meet at 6:15 PM in order to ride by 6:30 PM. Meeting date is July 20. Meeting location is the Scenic Park Picnic area near Sweetwater Landing in the Rocky River reservation (when you turn into the marina parking lot, stay straight all the way back to the picnic shelter area). We'll go for an hour ride and then practice transitions. Questions as always are welcome!
E-mail me if you have any questions.
Jen

Great! Don't forget your running shoes. We'll transition into our running shoes and then run a short time in order to be familiar with the "brick" feeling in our legs.

This will be my first as well. I will be there!.
Question... I was thinking about doing the super sprint for my first one and then doing the sprint distance for Greater Cleveland and Fairport Harbor..... do you think the super sprint is worth doing just to get familiar? I haven't had any open water swims yet so I didn't want to overdo it. Your thoughts?

Dan
That's a good call - and if you are interested in doing a short open water swim next Saturday (the day before the race) - just to get a feel for it - let me know - we are doing a newbies friendly swim at Mentor Headlands on Saturday at 8am

Oh that's perfect. I will attend for sure. Is this going to be the same group that's been meeting for the Greater Cleveland tri? I know there have been a a few training sessions (3 in all) to go over the Greater Cleveland tri ins and outs. Either way I will be there. Lot #17 I believe?

Just some quick updates.
Tomorrow night's session will be a great opportunity for new members to meet many of the CTC board members. President Andrew Joyce, VP Angie Ridgel (also training director) and Events Director Suzi Harman plan to be there with me.
Angie is going to bring one of Dave Harner's specially designed for us transition racks, so we can practice transitions in style! Bring everything you plan to bring for the bike to run (T2) transition in your race and we'll practice after our ride! Then, on Saturday, attend Andrew's session for transition practice for T1 (from swim to bike)!
E-mail me if you have any questions. Hope to see you tomorrow!

The forecast is calling for late day thunderstorms. I plan to still ride if it is just raining. If it is storming though at 6:30, then we'll have the Q&A session first under the shelter of the picnic pavilion and ride/practice transitions once the storm passes.

I haven't had any open water swims yet so I didn't want to overdo it. Your thoughts? Comments from another newbie: The super-sprint "open water" swim has the feeling of swimming in a large, cold, muddy, outdoor pool with a lot of other people. If you haven't done open-water swimming, I think it's a good choice. When I did it, I hadn't done any open-water swimming, and I found it unnerving to open my eyes with my face in the water and see nothing but mud.
