Andrew Joyce suggested I logged on and introduced myself.
Some years ago, I took up bicycling and have embraced the concept of edurance riding (50 -120 miles). Two years ago I took up running, and I run to and from work on a regular basis. I ran a 10 mile run and two half marathon last year. I am planning on the 10 miler later this month, and the Cleveland (half) marathon in May.
For some reason I have developed a desire to look at doing triathlons, but my swimming abilities leaves a lot to be desired. I am fairly strong when it comes to breast stroke (although I have not practiced much recently). However, I would like to learn to swim free-style as well, so I - if for no other reason - can switch if necessary.
Andrew told me that there would be a swim class starting in a not too distant future, so my question to whoever answer, where do I start with all this, and - apart from writing the check and become a member where do I start.
Thanks in advance.

I also live in Cleveland Heights and swim with the local Masters class in Shaker Heights in the slow lane :-) It's a great place to get a good workout. It's at Woodbury Middle School off Woodland ave. In the summer they swim outside at Thornton. Nice friendly folks. Swims early though - Tues, Thurs @ 5:45-7:15 and Sat @ 7:00. www.ohiomasters.com

Hey Jan,
I understand your issue w/the swimming as I have really been focusing on that as of late. Anyways, I think rule number 1 is to get in the pool often - aim for at least 3 swims a week if possible but understand that any swimming is better than none. Also, if you are competing in the tri's -which by the way is just a ton of fun- than you probably want to learn freestyle. I'd say go to that swim clinic and also, look possibly at a lesson or two. I know there is some link under member discounts that may help you here. I'd offer my assistance Jan but I just don't feel qualified - just as with everything, the fundamentals are key so if freestyle is new to you than I highly suggest you learn right the first time so that you don't have to unlearn bad habits. I think it all refers to that whole thing about building a house on loose gravel itll crumble but build it on solid ground and you'll be fine..........same thing with learning freestyle. Take care and hope to see you around at the club events and local Tri's. Do yourself a huge favor and enter a few....you won't be dissappointed.

Hey Jan,
I am a newbie as well, and totally agree with Dave re: lessons. I've been swimming with Leah Nyikes from Total Immersion recently and she has really helped improve my freestyle. If you're interested, I can get you her contact info. Just let me know!

Thank you all for your help. I greatly appreciate all the responses so far. I would love to join you at the swim on the 23rd, but unfortunately I am in the middle of training with Team in Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to ride around Lake Tahoe (for the fourth time). I have promised to take some folks who have had less time than me on a ride that morning.
I did take one of Leah's classes, and I think think she is awesome. I learned a lot from taking one of her one day classes, and will do it again. Currently I don't have the $$$ to do private lessons, but that has been on my mind as well.
I think one of the reasons I am looking into becoming a member of the club is being in a club (time permitting) and to learn some of the concepts of putting the three disciplines together, learn strategies, etc
One of my goals is (while I am healthy) to do a triple crown with Team in Training (century/half or whole marathon and a tri, and being the person I am - I want to do it the same year).
So this is a little more where I am coming from. I will continue to monitor this thread, and I hope one of these days I will be able to meet you guys.
If it sound like English is not my first language, it is because I am Danish. I have been in the US for 16 years, and in Cleveland 13.
