I have progressed from horrible to just kinda sucky with my freestyle. I went to CSU masters once but there didn't seem to be a "slow guys" lane and it was kinda pitiful getting in everybody's way. What's the protocol for the slow guys at the masters groups? Is there a slow lane? Are any of the west side/downtown groups more suitable for slow guys than others? Coach says to go to a masters group. So I go. Comments appreciated. Thanks.

I would say the Lakewood master group has a wider range of pace groups. For the main sets, the coach usually has 2-3 different interval times for different levels of swimmers. For example a set of 5 x 100's, some lanes will go on 1:30 and others may do 1:45.

woah, is 1:45 on the hundred as slow as it gets? what if you're a two-minute kinda guy? or more? stay away till you get faster?

Orange has much slower lanes, but it is on the East side.

thanks, jodi. it may be worth the ride over there to feel at least halfway comfortable in a lane. (You're my ST heroine, you know). cleveland is strange ... in florida there's lots of "regular" nonfast guys that do this stuff ... up here it's fast or don't join in. go figger. doin it anyway, to hell with it.

I think they practice at 7:30 PM MWF. I know they practice at 7:30 am on Sat because I've been out there recently. I'm a morning person myself, so I'm a CSU girl when my schedule permits. CSU and Shaker are definitely the faster masters groups around. I'm in the slow lane at CSU, but the second to fastest lane at Orange. I can make the fast send-offs at Orange, and struggle sometimes to make the slowest sendoffs at CSU. So keep looking around. You'll find a group that is more your style!

Sorry, I was just throwing some times out there...those probably aren't accurate (the fastest group is probably on 1:45 or so) but there would probably be a send off around 2:00 or more.
Anyway, there is plenty of variety of swim levels. I've swam at CSU before and it is nothing like that.

What happens at these masters swims if you don't know how to do any stroke besides freestyle?
It's it considered OK to just do freesyle while everyone else might be doing the breast stroke?
I would kind of like to try it, but I'm afraid of getting laughed out of the water.

I have swum(swam?) at most of the area Masters groups over the years. They all seem very supportive of new or less accomplished swimmers.
It's OK to do freestyle instead of the other strokes, as long as you aren't too fast for others that are doing the strokes. Maybe do some freestyle drills instead.
If you are a very weak kicker, try using Zoomers or some other type if fins that will allow you to keep pace with the rest of the lane.
