So I did some dead lifts the other day. I learned that if you are over the age of 35 and sit a desk all day, you should not do dead lifts. Who made those weights so heavy anyway?

Dead lifts are an outstanding exercise. Form is everything with this. Useful video. Note the arch in the back and how close the bar is kept to the body: media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_DeadliftIntro.movPS., No need to lift as much as the women in the video. They're clearly stronger and younger than we are.

Dead lifts are a great overall body workout. I also just started lifting again a few weeks ago and after a workout with dead lifts and squats my lower back kills me for a couple days. It goes away after a couple sessions.
Make sure you use proper form with these or you are asking for trouble.

I will keep them up, as well as my squats. I really could not ride my bike the next day - my hamstrings were way too tight. I was using a pretty low weight, perhaps not low enough. they do make 2 pound dumbbells, right?
On a side note, I am heading over to the Rocky River rec for lunch every day if anyone wants to join me. I guess I could use a spot!

Matt- I saw your reference to crossfit. Have you been to the new Lakewood Crossfit gym? A guy in my Rotary started that. I am thinking about joining to get ready for the season.

I've not. The east side group opened a gym as well, near CSU.

Hey Patrick, I just found this site today, it's great.
Matt and Jack are absolutely right about making sure you are using proper form. Almost everyone we see does them wrong. Once a person is taught properly, the weight they can safely lift goes up quickly.
We did heavy deads last wednesday and several of us hit new PRs, and nothing hurt the next few days.
