Upon completion of my first tri season I am ready to rest up a bit. For you seasoned vets, what works for you in the early part of the off season to rest as much as possible without losing the cardio endurance that takes years to build?
No running? Lots of swimming? Do you recommend strength/weight training? When do you start base building for next season?

I'm not really that seasoned, my first real year of Tri's also but I like 2-3 beers per night and steaks and burgers on a regular basis. Oh wait that's what I do year round.
Actually I'm a runner so that's what I'll be doing outside all the time, then rolling back into swimming with Reddy's program and possibly biking with New Vision in a few months.

I am just finishing 6 weeks of active recovery. What is active recovery for me? It does not have much to do with swimming, biking, or running...I took the time off to mentally recharge. I stayed active with everything that I could not do during training like golf, tennis, water skiing, drinking with friends (versus alone), etc. Yes, you will lose some fitness, but you will bounce back faster than you would expect and will be mentally charged to get back into it.
So my advice, is to chill and have some fun for a few weeks, then slowly get back into training with your base building. Just my 2cents.

I like to overtrain like the next guy, but the last couple years I've taken a month off at the end of the year and it really helps. You're not going to lose that much base, and what you do lose will come back fast.

I work on the honey do list which normally piles up. Sometimes you can get a good cardio workout with this list.

After being forced into an early recovery of little to no training for almost 6 weeks, I'm starting back with short swims, yoga and weights. I am adding in some short bikes now too and hope (!) to start back on running in 2-3 weeks. I'll start with the running with a focus on low heart rate until early next year. Gotta say I love the yoga
