2 weeks ago on a monday i came down with a pretty bad cold that really kicked my arse. So i took 2 days off, and on wednesday went for an easy ride, felt horrible and didnt work out again that week. By the weekend i was feeling like myself again when i went to wisconsin. I didnt get much sleep 2 days in a row, and drank heavily at the race. Came back, felt ok and went on another wednesday ride. I wake up thursday feeling bad again, and felt terrible friday, saturday, and sunday. Today i feel slightly better but still have a sore throat.
If you're still with me after that hazy recount of the last 2 weeks, can anyone give me advice on how long to wait before i can get training again? This is a first for me as i usually just train through a cold and have never gone through something, felt better, then slide backwards into sickness like i have now.
I want to get going again, but im gun shy now and dont want another relapse. Im sick of being sick at this point! Help!

Rob,
As you might expect there is no easy answer. If you are done racing for the season, I would recommend laying off or taking it very, very easy until you start to feel stronger and stronger. Add as your body allows.
If you're still trying to stay in shape for a late season event, just know that your fitness will not leave as quickly as you think. I would still listen to the body and start out very slowly once you feel some strength return. The first couple of work outs will suck, but you will bounce back fast.
I have been in the same situation...I have had a severe cold for 3 weeks now. I completely stopped working out for lack of energy. I just started trying to work out again and 30 minute runs feel like eternity. My lungs just aren't clear so I will not push it until I feel 100% (but I'm also in my downtime before Lake Placid training begins.) I do feel that booze has prevented me from getting over this faster.
Patience is IMPORTANT!

The general rule is "feed a cold", not "drink a cold". Get off the sauce fellas !!!
Seriously, I always thought the rule of thumb was that you could work through a cold as long as it wasn't in your chest (or a bacterial issue).

In my defense, i was feeding it the same time i was drinking it. Chimichungas, mmm Went for a ride last night, had no lungs for the hills, but i feel ok today. Im happy.

Ever think of seeing a doctor about it?

ahhhh, yes the ol' Doctor...
For whatever reason, I've always had the fear of giving $100+ only to hear "congrats, you have a cold you pansy. Go home and get lots of rest, rest, rest, & drink lots of non-alcoholic fluids." Thanks Dr. for the wisdom realizing if I could get lots of rest, rest, rest, I wouldn't be here in the first place ;D

Exactly. I recently saw an optomologist about my eyes (always bloodshot, i suspected dry eye) and he sees me 3 times over 3 months to at the end say "yeah i think you have dry eye, not much can be done about it except artificial tear drops"
Totally worth the $90 in co-pays.
