I'm doing the Flying Pig marathon May 7th so most of my training has been geared towards my running. I've fit in some swimming and biking but not as much as I'd like. As I taper for the marathon, I thought I'd increase my biking and swimming but a friend told me that you should not do alot of cross-training when you taper either. What do you guys do or what would you recommend? This is my first marathon so I have no experience to pull from.
Thanks, Carly

IMO, if this race means anything to you (and if its your first marathon, then I think it probably does), then focus on tapering for the marathon.
I think a little cross training (particularly swimming) might be good at this time as a way to take the stress off your legs, but you're not going to get your legs back by replacing one activity at high volume with another at high volume.
One race at a time.

Carly,
One day of cross-training p/week can't hurt as long as you treat it as an "easy" day - swimming is great due to no impact and a great workout. But, try not to do anything new - your not going to increase your fitness in a few weeks - you have put in the miles and hard work so now is your chance to recharge your body/legs and get ready to run the race that you want to run - don't let anything sway you from this goal.
So, great job in preparing for your first marathon. I know you've been putting in some hard work so congratulate yourself and give the body a bit of rest.......I think this will prepare you to really run and enjoy your first marathon. Take care and best of Luck.....enjoy your race!!
