Well it's that time again, time for the USAT National Challenge Competition (NCC)!
If you are new, the USAT NCC Challenge is a promotion put on by USA Triathlon to keep us motivated throughout the year. Tri Clubs across the country go head-to-head to see who can log the most training miles during the competition and sign ups start now!
This year we are setting it up similar to how it was three years ago in that everyone will go to a Google Docs Share Excel File and put in your data. You will be able to see how you stack up relative to all CTC Participants!!! One board member will input everyone’s data to the official USAT Standings on at least a weekly basis. Also, look for regular updates from CTC this year!
This year we are expecting great distances from you all - plus it is a great way to get in shape for triathlon season next year! Not only that, if you do not already track your mileage, this is a great way to get started!!! There will be certificates for top man and woman each month from USAT and CTC will be recognizing our top performers!
Please be assured no matter if you put up 1 mile a week or 200 a week, every little bit helps CTC and we want it to count. Enter today as we need 75 people to fill our roster!!!!
USAT is in charge of this, so to participate in the NCC, you have to be a member of CTC AND USAT. If you wish to participate in the 2010-2011 USAT Challenge, email your NAME, your USAT # & your USAT Expiration Date to janet_e1@yahoo.com as soon as possible.
All participants will be set up in the club’s Google Share File. You will be responsible for tracking your mileage update your mileage in the google file. We will post the file share link here and you can see where you stack up!!!!
So how does the NCC work exactly? The NCC will feature three sessions, each one month in duration, from December to February. A CTC representative will upload all participants’ mileage into the official USAT NCC website which will have automatic calculation and ranking. In order to equalize each discipline, each discipline is weighted outside of cycling.
1 Swim Mile = 10 Miles 1 Bike Mile = 1 Mile 1 Run Mile = 3 Miles
Team Benchmark- The first priority for each club is to meet the benchmark for that month. The first club to reach the benchmark will receive a certificate for their efforts.
December 2010 is swimming and the benchmark is 500 miles. Between the Reddy’s swimming and a few of our known dolphins, CTC has got a good chance of doing well! (January is Biking, February is Running!)
All sessions will include swim, bike, and run, but one sport will be highlighted for each session. The winning club for each session is determined by the greatest number of miles logged during that session for that month's discipline. There are also prizes for the first club to reach the benchmark mileage for each session, and Overall Combined Mileage for a club at the end of the three months.
Let’s make the 2010-2011 the season that CTC dominates the NCC CHALLENGE! COMPETITION KICKS OFF DECEMBER 1st...GET IN ON THE ACTION TODAY!

I'm signed up!
Let's make a commitment to excel in the challenge this year, everyone! I know that most of us keep track of our mileage, all you have to do is commit to entering your data into a spreadsheet to help the club, very easy to do (glad we are doing it this way, emailing somehow seems to be a pain, even though that is easy too).
2 things to remember that always seem to get asked: 1) Enter ALL your miles for swimming/biking/running EVERY month, regardless of what focus the month is. The focus of that month is just for hitting the benchmark/rankings. 2) Biking mileage. USAT will "officially" tell us that trainer miles don't count, because you can't calibrate, blah blah blah blah blah. I conservatively estimate my mileage on the trainer and report that. No one is going to ask where your mileage was done.

Swim distance. 1. If I understand the conversions correctly, we need to take our total yardage (or meters) and multiply by 10, then input that number into the spreadsheet. Doing so will give us 1 swim mile equal to 10 total miles. Correct? 2. Also note, that you may have to change the totals formula in column H to match yards or meters in the swim columns D or E. If we care Run: Though I haven't worked the formula yet, a similar conversion would need to be computed before the total milage is entered into the spreadsheet. Correct? I assume this is right, I mean, I realize Durno is a stud, but 8,000 yards today? ;D

As far as the conversions/weighing - that is purely for the competition from what I understand. Each individual will put in their ACTUAL mileage, then the mileage will be weighted based on that at a later date for the rankings, or when our representative turns in our mileage. The Durno 8,000 yards was still an "example" that Janet had in the spreadsheet, it is blank now.
For the meters/yards columns, I think you are right, those formulas will have to be changed to accomodate for where you swim.

And we are off….! I am doing the best I can getting everyone added (while I am supposed to be working for realz). The tracking file is located here. spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AuCwwZRshAlQdFNoVF8tdUdRRFpURUtvMGlsMVRLVkE&hl=en&authkey=COaa7JoPA few things to note: 1. And most importantly, if you sent me an email and do not see your name, please let me know. 2. If you still want in (it is not too late!!), let me know. If you look, we only have 16 of our 75 spots filled. 3. When I had set up the spreadsheet originally, I had input some random totals to make sure I had proper linkage. While Durno is a bada$$, those were just random numbers which I have now deleted. PROBLEM is I wasn’t sure which ones were my arbitrary ones versus new numbers that people entered. So if you entered your data earlier today, you may need to reenter it. 4. Keep an eye on your tab and club summary tab to make sure everything looks correct. 5. With regard to the conversions, weightings (swimx10 and runx3) will be done automatically by USAT on their website. 6. With regard to swim distance, please be sure on your tab that you are picking up yards or meters properly. To make it clear, please delete the one you are not using on the given day you swim. (See JEdwards tab as an example). 7. In the daily total, make sure your weekly mileage is picking up the proper column for swimming (Column D or E) based on yards or meters. (Let me know if you have a question here and I can help) 8. It may take a few days to make sure all formulas are flowing properly through the sheet. If you have any issues, please let me know. I am also saving the file periodically should something go horribly awry. 9. I am in charge of entering club data in the USAT site for December. As it is rather time intensive to do daily, I will likely do this every Monday (just as a FYI). Club results will be available for viewing here. www.racetracker.ca/usat/Any questions or comments, let me know! Goal is to make this fun for all participants! December is swim month. 16 people divided by our club 500 Mile target is a 31.25 miles per person in December. That is a whole lot…sure could use a few more people to help us out!On a good personal note, to kick things off right, I swam my longest swim to date of 4500 meters. As a slower swimmer, it took awhile! Good luck to all!

Wow, that is a lot of swimming. We could certainly use more participants! Even with Reddy's class and my own swimming, I'll probably only hit about 20 miles. It's too bad the CTC Swim Challenge is in January and not December : )

Well in just 3 days, 7 people have contributed nearly 18 miles in our swimming bucket...only 482 more miles to hit the target! Who else wants to help us out? Kudos to Kelly, Tiffany, James, Jay, Jen, Angie & Janet in the pool!
Club has racked up 94 miles so far! Keep it up!
Answer the following questions- CTC Member? USAT Member? Worked out at all past 3 days?
If you checked yes to all three of the above then....have you signed up for the USAT challenge yet? and if not, what are you waiting for?

Or, you could do what I did and let your swim mileage record in both yards and meters so that your total is almost twice what you actually swam ;-)
I didn't realize that was happening until Janet posted the totals. The correction has been made and I have fallen off of the list of top fishies (much to my chagrin).

Guess you better get to biking Phil....easiest ways to rack up the overall miles quickly.
For some odd reason, I must not be following my own logic to rack up the miles biking since I have ran more than I have biked since this has started! Almost 2.5 miles in the pool this morning and I am still a good ways back from the fish in the group like Tiffany and Kelly.
On that note we are over half way through the month and the club is only at 88 swim miles...that 500 benchmark might be rough but we can try!

I'm not sure our swim number is that high. Is everyone making sure that their swims aren't counted as yds and meters?
