I just finished IMLP and am debating getting an M-dot tattoo. I'm curious on what everyone's thoughts are on getting the M-dot. Should I do it or should I just be proud of my achievement without a tattoo.
I am not a tattoo guy and don't know if there is any other reason as to why I would get a tattoo. I am proud of what I just accomplished and am debating on whether I should get the tattoo.
Any thoughts?

wait six months and see if you feel the same way still
I have completed a couple of IMs now - and yearned for one - but never ended up getting one.
Maybe after a few more - who knows - and yes - I already have a tat (non tri related)

Already done, although a little painful on an already sore calf ;D
I've been waiting to get this for at least 2 years.
Did I mention no sun or swimming for a few weeks, I never said I was smart.

i'm in adrews camp - have been saying i'm going to get an m-dot tat for more than 4 years now after my first IM - i have it pictured in my mind, know where it will go - still simply have not pulled the trigger - not worried about the pain or against tats - just never seem to get it done
and ya i can't imagine my self being out of the sun or water for a couple weeks to let it heal
who knows when - guess i need to start drinking again - a good drunk and i might just show up at a tat parlor at 2 a.m. and get this thing done - then again no ;]

#1. OUCH! It really hurts. But not as much as 140.6 miles does. I debated about it to. The funny thing is that I was more gung ho about it after my first than I was after my third. I ended up getting one and have never regretted it. If I had waited until after my last one I don't think I would have done it. It just doesn't seem that important anymore. Anybody else feel the same?

You earned it - so I guess if you want the tatoo then get it but I'd say that it really is just a personal choice.

Advances in Tattoo Ink Technology: There have been recent advances in the innovation of a high quality, more easily removable and safe ink for creation of body art by a company called Freedom-2. Freedom-2 ink received good reviews last month in both NY Times and LA Times. www.freedom2ink.com

OK, perfect timing -- today is Bill's birthday and he got a card that says "In 2055, retirement village residents play a game of 'Guess What the Tattoo Used to Be!'"
I shall remain ink-less after ripping on my 60+ year old mother for getting a tattoo . . . told her at least we'd be able to id the body -- in a loving way, of course!
All in all, it's a personal decision. You are an Ironman regardless of whether you sport a tattoo.

i'm thinking about getting one. But I think that I will wait untill I have done at least 5 ironman or so, that way no one can say.... "hey, but you did it in 16 hours" Why does that have any bearing on it? You're all thinking way too much about this. If you want the tat - and are prepared for the lifelong commitment - get the tat. If you don't and aren't - don't. End of story. Tattoos are not for people who go looking for approval for their actions.

After putting some more thought into it, I am getting it. It isn't going to be big, just about 3/4" high on my ankle. I have thought about getting it since well before I signed up last year so at 11:45, it's on.
My questions is what in the heck is matt doing on the forum at 4:02 am???

hey mike i'm not a freak - i don't paint my fingernails - that would be wierd.
agree with matt - if you want a tat get a tat - if you don't then don't. value and meaning of events in ones life is all very personal - what works for some does not for others - at long as u hurt no one else do what you want with the tat

I second Matt's comment:
If you have to ask ...
As for me personally, I have no burning desire to get one, although I have been in enough tattoo parlors watching girlfriends getting them. I've always drawn the line at piercings - at least you can take those out. A tattoo is pretty much forever.
With that said, I am smart enough to never say never.
One thing is for sure, I will not be rolling over to Miami Ink to get one.

Agree with Matt. If you want it get it and don't worry what anyone else thinks.
Before I got my tattoo (not MDot but will get that provided I finish IMMOO) a friend told me to think about being on a table someday dead with a stranger looking at your body. Let your tattoos say something about your life. My first tatto spotlights my Irish Catholic Heritage and my kids. An MDot qualifies for that as I am sure it will be something all finishers are proud of forever. I also think it is unlikely to wish you didn't have the MDot but may regret the I LOVE _ _ _ _ _ FOREVER that you have had to remove or find another partner with the same name.
I did tell my kids if they screwed up too bad I would put a line through their name.

just make sure you pony up the $475 for the mdot race. evidently the "other races" that are 2.4,112 & 26.2 don't have the same announcer at the end of the race. therefor they must not be ironman races. i suggest getting anacondas, skulls and flames with it also.

Hey everyone,
There seems to be several of you out there who have M Dot tats and I have been wanting to get one since I finished IM Moo in 2006. So, let's see some of those IM tats! If you are able to post them, please do.
Thanks! Trina

You should do whatever makes you feel good about yourself....I would recommend that if you are thinking about leg, calf or ankle placement, you choose the right side/leg. That way, when you pass someone in a race of any distance, they know...."You are and Ironman"...
I already have a couple of tats, but no M-dots. I have finished 2 IMs, out of 2 attempts, and qualified for Kona this year. I always want one at race time, but don't feel as strong when I give it a few weeks.
I went for the M-Dot sticker on the vehicle instead. It seems to make me just as happy.
They are pretty cool though!

Still no plans to get one after Ironman Florida. Considering that the average temp highs from January through December here in Miami Beach range from 76 to 90 (at least that is what the weather guy said), I do not anticipate being out of the water or sun long enough to let it heal.
But I will never say never.

Ink me up! Hell ya MDOT here I come! I wish I could get it at the finish line of Ironman ...hell, im sure I will be so numb if they want to brand me with a horse shoe I would be down with that. I would also like to have all medical tests done at the finish so if they need to do open heart surgery I wouldnt even need an anasteseologist (sp?) just open my chest and and swap out the sucker!
