Re: Long Course nutrition; "Dates" « Result #3 Yesterday at 3:46pm »
Here's a recipe: Fill a 24-oz bottle about 1/3 way with Hammer Perpetuem powder (they assign flavors to this product, but I'll be darned if I can tell the difference, so it doesn't matter which you use), add a scoop of Carbopro, 1/2 cup of Quaker oats and a 1/4 tsp of salt. Fill the rest of the way with water. Shake shake shake shake and let it sit in the fridge overnight. Shake it again before you drink it. It's neither liquid nor gel. It's more like slurry. It looks like vomit and tastes like snot. So don't look at it. Just slurp it. A single mouthful (my mouth) is about 200 calories. Keep you going long time.
My only other suggestion is to diversify. If dates work for you, great. But I doubt you'll want to eat them (or gels, or bars) solely for 12 or 14 or 17 hours.
I am pretty impressed with what the 100-mile runners eat on the run. Candy, pizza, grilled cheese, coffee, sub sandwiches, fruit, salty stuff. Elizabeth's BR 100 aid stations are always like a smorgasbord.
Excellent point, that never even crossed my mind but I cannot think of anything besides dates and gel pack.
what else gives energy and is easy to carry?
This is all for doing a HIM this year and then IM next.
I am open to suggestion. ( I cannot carry a Wendy's double)
FS cross crountry skis « Result #19 on Dec 23, 2009, 9:43pm »
For Sale Fischer air core superlight XC skis. I've used these about 3 times, they are the kind you have to wax. I never got the hang of the waxing, so it was just easier to use the old waxless ones. I don't know alot about skis, but the salesman made sure to point out that he was matching the skis to my height and weight. I'm 6 foot and 170 pounds. No boots or poles included. Will include some very used Solomon bindings. I really liked these bindings, so I bought another set for my waxless skis, and am going to keep the slightly used bindings and include the very used ones. I saved the original receipt, paid $262.68 for the set on 12-27-1986. Asking price is $25.
New Years day urban bike ride with CAMBA « Result #21 on Dec 23, 2009, 7:32pm »
If your looking for a little less chilly way to bring in the new year CAMBA, the local mountain bike club, is doing their 9th annual ride at noon on new years day. If the weather is good I'd expect around 150 riders. If its bad there will still be 50.

I will be there in support after a run through Huntington Beach Park and Bay Village........... Although, its quite tempting to have my wetsuit in the trunk, just in case I feel like jumping in .......

Winter officially started this week on 12/21! So celebrate that the days are now getting longer!!!
While we had the opportunity to reflect on 2009 at the Winter Banquet, it is now time to look ahead to 2010 and in keeping with tradition, that means kicking off the year with a Polar Bear Swim!
Mark your calendars now for Cleveland 7th Annual Polar Bear Swim!
Date: Friday, January 1
Time: High Noon
Place: Huntington Beach, Bay Village, OH
Post swim gathering & warm-up venue: Panini’s Bar and Grill in Westlake
This event kicks off CTC’s triathlon year as many people are now getting back into training after some rest time around the holidays. Plan to renew now as we are offering a $5 discount throughout the month of January ($20 early bird, $25 after 1/31)

I always thought that if I nailed down my long course nutrition strategy I would get a Clearwater slot...which would lead to more dates (you know, since I would be in competition for a world championship....that should be good for a date or 2).
Actually. I rarely use whole dates for fear that my caloric needs whilst working out are so high that the post-workout result of consuming so many dates would be undesirable. But I often train with larabars, whose ingredients are typically dates, nuts and fruit (insert another joke here). Yes, the bars only have a few ingredients. The nuts add a bit of protein and fat also, which is a plus. Cherry pie is my favorite (not a joke, true statement).

Re: 2009 Coming to a Close....... « Result #39 on Dec 21, 2009, 8:54pm »
09 was like climbing a mountain for me, it started really low and just kept going up. I suffered my first injury and opted to try and heal with chiropractic and holistic care instead of surgery and although the road to recovery was long and very painful I feel almost as good as I did prior to the injury. i switched my focus from time and distance goals to a more relaxed and healthy lifestyle approach, at least thats what I told myself until race day. As I stood on the beach prerace somehow it didn't seem ok to only give 99% even though my body was only running at 80%. i got myself a mountain biking "girlfriend" and had a great time training all summer long. Tried a few new group workouts and learned some new training ideas and met some good friend. parlayed a triathlon lifetime goal into a great family vacation. my wife finally got a job the day before we left for the vacation and alleviated much of the stress and guilt I was feeling about spending nearly $5K on my race. was able to talk to, work out with and learn from professional triathletes before the race. was able to talk to, work out with and get inspired by some amazing physically challenged athletes, it was one of those things that stick with ya. finished my A race with a big smile on my face despite what the time clock showed. kept injury free for the remainder of the year. was able to keep my job, barely.

Sounds fun. I'm in. Do you have any space for me in your bike box? I can't let you get a jump on me next year since I know we're planning on going head to head at Bellfaire!

Re: Carriage Hill trail closed « Result #42 on Dec 21, 2009, 7:02pm »
All is not lost. I was back on the Carriage Trail today. From the towpath you can run about 1.5 miles up the north side of the trail before you hit the Hemlock Bridge. There is a way around the bridge without trespassing, but you run into the next bridge within 1/4 mile. The other two bridges span steep ravines so unless you are a mountain goat, trespass into Greenwood or illegally hop the barrier (not recommended) they are impassable.
You can still run the north side and get 3 miles roundtrip though. Not sure how far the south trail goes before you get to a bridge. That's for a future run.
I hope the Park can scare up the money to fix the bridges!

Chuck!
I feel your pain! @#$%#$!@%@#$@# #$%%$@%!
Its a great place to hike and run, well until they can find a solution....... Quite beautiful, period.......
Maybe its Insurance and the liability factor involved too...... Who's to say how much it cost to insure bridges in parks....... Hey, if it came down to sand blasting the steel, re-inspect its strength, and re-painting.... I would be one to volunteer to help fix it.......
But, lucky for you Chuck! The Brecksville Reservation has an awesome park too........not to mention the Buckeye Trail goes right through that same area.........

Off To Hawaii, Again! « Result #45 on Dec 21, 2009, 2:06pm »
Well, as luck would have it, I got a great price on a flight and condo just after Thanksgiving, for a trip in Feb........ Now I see prices on Continental are going back up.........
The first is a biathlon, Sunday morning in Waikiki.... Perfect for me, short distance 5k run and a 1k swim....... The second is the Tuesday night ride at the Kilauea District down in Waikiki area........ It looks to be a 30 mile loop around Diamond Head National Monument, and then back into town....
Looks to be a solid week of Winter training 2010......
p.s. my main focus will be "8 solid days of surfing"

Re: Fall Gear Order! « Result #46 on Dec 21, 2009, 1:29pm »
I think my gear may be missing in action. I thought I circled to pick it up at BA, but when I stopped in to get it Sherman said it wasn't there. So he called FF to see if it was there, not there either.
If it was shipped it hasn't showed up yet. And let me know how much the shipping was so I can square up with someone.

Re: East Side Indoor Cycling « Result #49 on Dec 21, 2009, 11:04am »
Mike, we have all done something like that before. I drove all the way to Akron for a trainer ride only to realize I had forgotten my cycling shoes. Kinda hard to ride barefoot on speedplays. I had my bike all set up and ready to go, ran around asking anyone for spare shoes, then packed up and went home.
I missed Saturdays ride again, but for good reason. With a majority of the Case swim team home for winter break Steve and I had an opportunity to get in the pool with the remaining swimmers for Saturday morning practice. Two hours of free pool time and a challenging workout already written I could not resist, so I logged 5250yds for the USAT challange!
With January being cycling month for the club challenge I will (hopefully) be more motivated to get there
